Wetherspoon is a fast-moving business; therefore, providing accurate and up-to-date legal advice is crucial. Our in-house legal team works closely with every part of the business in ensuring that all areas are carried out with minimal risk and in compliance with an ever-growing amount of legislation.

The legal team deals with a wide range of areas, including licensing and regulatory, litigation, planning, property, contracts, commercial, data protection, health & safety and company secretarial. No problem is too big or small and it aims to help colleagues across all areas of the business to find a way to do what they want to do – whether that’s a written agreement, some advice, representation at a meeting or just a second opinion. Colleagues across the business approach and involve the legal team in almost anything involving risk, where the team then has the role to mitigate that risk – giving commercial, as well as legal, advice.

A company solicitor’s story

I started working at J D Wetherspoon in 2011 as a bar associate. I completed the qualifications to become a trainee solicitor – and that was the next career opportunity I was looking for. I applied for a vacancy and was successful on an assessment day.

During my two-year training contract, I experienced a wide variety of legal areas, such as licensing, property, contracts and litigation. My experience of training with the in-house legal team at J D Wetherspoon was challenging, yet enjoyable. The company moves at such a fast pace that the team is required to work quickly and accurately. As a trainee solicitor, I was given my own areas of responsibility and became a valued member of the team. I qualified as a solicitor in January 2015 and started a new role of licensing & regulatory solicitor. The pace of the company and breadth of work mean that life in the legal team is never dull. As an employer, J D Wetherspoon is good at recognising the potential in people and getting the best out of them.
